The result is not just beautiful paintings, but a restored will to fight and a practical way to clear hospital bills

Female genital schistosomiasis: A neglected disease silently destroying women's lives

In this deeply personal and informative podcast, senior gender journalist Moraa Obiria

explores the hidden toll of Female Genital Schistosomiasis on women in Homa Bay

County, Kenya. Through the story of Loza, and insights from a neglected tropical

diseases expert and research scientist, the episode unpacks how a parasitic disease

linked to infested freshwater continues to affect thousands silently. Backed by research

from LVCT Health and the Ministry of Health, the story calls for urgent public health

interventions, including clean water, improved sanitation, and awareness, to protect

vulnerable women in endemic areas. This is not just a health issue; it is a matter of

justice.

The article highlights the challenges faced by women with albinism in Kenya due to increased ultraviolet (UV) radiation amid climate change. Despite government provision of protective lotions like sunscreen, access remains inconsistent, leaving many vulnerable to severe sunburns and skin cancer. High costs and ineffective distribution systems add to the struggles of women like Zipporah, who face physical and economic hardships. The piece also touches on systemic issues such as inadequate budget allocations and registration hurdles. Advocacy efforts aim to reinstate sunscreen as an essential medicine, urging greater recognition of the heightened risks faced by persons with albinism.

Kenya is one of the Lake region countries that is vulnerable to climate change. A slight weather change pattern means communities are faced with drought and flooding. On the other hand, the coastal towns face the risk of a climate change-induced sea level rise that threatens to submerge islands in a few decades.

Kenya is among the first African states to establish progressive climate legislation but the country also continues to support investments in extractive industries in support of development, the effect is that these industries are destroying local communities' livelihoods and keeping the country in an unsustainable path.

A conflict between the government's policies on development and Kenya's constitution's commitment to fighting effects of climate change finds an arena in many rural communities that are now invited to make hard choices for themselves and future generations.

In this narrative podcast series, Natural Justice, we follow individuals in communities forced to the frontline of this conflict as they push back using Kenyan courts to preserve their dignity and communal lands. They face huge challenges and are sandwiched between big government, Chinese contractors and Western corporations.

After meeting the young child who was punished for interrupting the fast in the last episode, we needed to understand where it all started. Why did Mackenzie choose Shakahola? What was his intent?

Our efforts bore no fruits as the rescued victims at the hospital were reluctant to speak to us. Those found in stable condition were lip-tight.

Our path led us to those rescued children from Shakahola, who at least had an idea of what went on and in this episode will help us paint a picture of Mackenzie's untold doings inside the forest.

On this episode, we learn how Pastor Mackenzie shut the rest of the world from the happenings inside Shakajola, we also get a detailed revelation as to how he convinced his followers to fast to death.

It all started back in 2017, when Paul Mackenzie was arrested on charges of radicalization and 'teaching in an unregistered institution.

Some parents in Malindi had raised concerns about him advocating for their children not to go to school.

The alleged powerful preacher was later tried and acquitted in October 2021.

His name pops up again in the mainstream media this year for something far worse.

What began as one family searching for their two missing children ended up with the discovery of mass graves, hundreds of bodies exhumed, and 600 more people missing, now dubbed the Shakahola Massacre, not only in the country but across the globe.

Together with my Nation colleagues, our assignment was to do a keen follow-up on a story we had started about the missing two children.

We had no idea what was before us.

A story that we will be telling through this podcast.

A four part series about grieving families, locals, a powerful preacher, and a negligent government as told by the journalist who broke the Shakahola story

We followed keenly behind the footsteps of homicide detectives inside the Shakahola Forest, from mapping and identifying mass graves to the search and rescue of victims believed to be followers of Kilifi-cult leader Paul Mackenzie to the exhumation exercise, and brought you the podcast series.

In our first episode, we will be tracing how the whole operation came into existence, who was the first person to expose the activities, and how Mackenzie followers were duped

For decades, poverty and injustice have been part and parcel of the lives of widows and their dependents; they have shed tears for the trauma they suffer at the hands of in-laws, cruel neighbors and even politicians.

Even though some communities still follow conservative traditions that deny widows their rights, the Amalo group is proof that an informed widow can help end oppressive cultures.

United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation(FAO) encourages vertical farming in the urban slums to help the urban poor access adequate fresh and safe food.

With the growing population and inevitable need to be food secure amid rising inflations and economic downturn, an agricultural innovation such as vertical farming becomes a powerhouse.

Presently, 55 per cent of the world's population live in urban areas, and by 2050, the proportion will hit 68 per cent, according to UN Habitat.

Going by this percentage , it means of the 4,397,073 Nairobi population captured in the 2019 census, 2, 418,390 live in the slums. By 2050, the number would rise by 571,619.

Lilian Achieng of Ngomongo area in Korogocho slum has tested the fruits of her vertical farming, and they are sweet.

Research suggests that two out of three girls are unable to access menstrual products regularly. To fill this gap, over the years, various organizations have joined hands to provide and distribute menstrual products among most vulnerable girls.
Women have the potential to be running mates for presidential aspirants. Article 27(8) of the Constitution on two-thirds gender principle gives women a legal backing to demand for inclusion in the Executive. Is their a party or Presidential aspirant gender conscious enough to settle for a woman and lead the way in getting them out of the corner?

In Makhwabue village of Kakamega County, Mr Shivonje is rejected by his own kin and friends.

They believe he was the stowaway who fell off a Kenya Airways plane as it approached Heathrow Airport in London in June 2019.

They claim the real Shivonje died in the incident and that his spirit is the one roaming the village. They say his presence is ominous and would bring misfortunes to the community.

Alive and determined to start a new lease of life, he talks to Lilys Njeru about his woes and dreams.

For almost six years PL(this is an acronym of his name) has been herding cattle here at Suguro village, in Narok South sub-county, Narok County. This he started at the age of 12 years old immediately after dropping out of school. This episode is about pastoralist boys and access to education. It brings to light the overlooked barriers making it difficult for the boys to enroll and finish school. It queries why the government is seemingly forgetting about the boychild yet it is much aware of the challenges they are facing in accessing education
