Why do friendships suddenly feel harder as adults?

At some point in your late 20s, something changes. Friends get married, careers get demanding, people move away, and suddenly the friendships that once felt effortless start to feel… complicated.

In this episode of As Told By Us, we talk about the reality of adult friendships — why people feel lonelier than ever, why we often prioritise romantic relationships over friendships, and what it actually takes to maintain meaningful connections as life evolves.

Have adult friendships become harder, or are we just not putting in the effort anymore?

Let's talk about it.

Last week's conversation was too good to end… so we kept it going.

In this Part 2 episode of As Told By Us, we sit down again with Kate and TJ for a brutally honest conversation about what it actually feels like to be a young adult trying to figure life out in this economy.

We were raised believing the formula was simple: go to school, get your degree, find a stable job, and build a life. But for many millennials and Gen Z today, that formula isn't working the way we were promised.

We talk about the reality of freelancing and inconsistent income, the pressure of hustle culture, moving back home as an adult, dating when you're not where you thought you'd be financially, and what it feels like to watch your peers seemingly "make it" while you're still figuring things out.

The conversation also gets deeply personal as we unpack faith, disappointment, patience, and the emotional weight of feeling like you did everything right… but life still hasn't worked out the way you expected.

This episode is for anyone who feels like they're navigating adulthood without a blueprint.

In this episode we discuss:

• The truth about freelancing vs a 9–5

• Why hustle culture feels unavoidable

• Losing jobs and questioning faith

• Dating expectations and the "provider" debate

• Moving back home and navigating independence

• The pressure of watching others succeed online

• Learning patience in a generation that feels behind

And to close it out, we ask a powerful question:

What would you tell your 38-year-old self?

Join the conversation and let us know — what would you say to your future self?

Follow As Told By Us for more honest conversations about adulting, relationships, money, and life as young Africans navigating the world.

What happens when you do everything "right"… and life still doesn't work out?

In this episode of As Told By Us, we sit down with Kate (29) and Tawanda (32) for an honest conversation about starting over in your late 20s and 30s. From quitting medical school to giving up an apartment and moving back home, this episode dives into the reality of adulthood in Zimbabwe — and what it means to redefine success when the plan you followed doesn't deliver the life you expected.

We talk about:

Moving back home as an adult

Switching careers in your 20s and 30s

The pressure to have it "figured out" by 30

Grieving the life you thought you'd have

Zimbabwe's job market realities

African parent expectations

Fear of disappointing your family

Redefining success on your own terms

If you're a millennial or Gen Z navigating career changes, relationship timelines, financial pressure, or the fear of starting over — this conversation is for you. Because sometimes adulthood isn't about sticking to the plan.

It's about having the courage to rewrite it.

What if money was never meant to control your life?

In this episode, we unpack the idea of "decentering money" and using it for what it truly is — a tool, not a master. So many of us were taught to chase income, grind endlessly, and tie our worth to productivity. But at what cost?

We explore how to shift the focus back to your peace, mental health, freedom, and lived experiences — because this life isn't a rehearsal. It's the only one you get.

This conversation is for anyone feeling stuck in hustle culture, burned out by survival mode, or questioning what "success" really means. Learn how to redefine wealth beyond numbers and build a life that actually feels good to live.

If this resonates, share your thoughts in the comments and subscribe for more honest conversations like this.

#DecenterMoney #MindsetShift #FinancialWellbeing #LifeBeyondWork #PodcastConversations

It seems that more and more people over 25 are—whether by choice or circumstance—still living at home with their parents or guardians. Is it a financial life-hack to stay rent-free in a tough economy, or is it a slow descent into madness, complete with curfews, clashing routines, and unsolicited life advice?

In this episode, we unpack the emotional, cultural, and economic realities of adulting under your parents' roof. We talk about the trade-offs—saving money vs. losing independence—and ask whether living at home is a setback or simply the smart move right now. We also hear from guests who've lived it, left it, or are still navigating the sometimes comforting, sometimes claustrophobic experience of being a grown-up in your childhood bedroom.

If you've ever had to explain to someone why you still live at home—or questioned it yourself—this one's for you.

PLUS: Get ready for our brand-new segment — Your Story, Your Voice — where we feature anonymous voice notes from YOU, our listeners. 🎧 Send them to our Whatsapp number +263 77 810 3171

📌 Production and Sponsorship

📩 Chat with us on our social media.

☕ Support the podcast by sending us a coffee on InnBucks: 0778103171 or through World Remit.

📱 Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and all major platforms.

🎙️ Recorded at NRVANA Labs.

Cheating: a scandal, a heartbreak… or just part of the game now?

In this explosive episode, we dive deep into why people cheat, how society responds — and why women always seem to get the shorter end of the judgment stick. From the Coldplay scandal that had the internet in flames to our own confessions, stories, and spicy opinions, no angle is off-limits.

We ask the real questions:

Is emotional cheating worse than physical?

Is cheating the new normal or still taboo?

And… what even counts as cheating in the age of DMs and "soft" betrayal?

PLUS: Hear real-life experiences from our hosts, and get ready for our brand-new segment — Your Story, Your Voice — where we feature anonymous voice notes from YOU, our listeners. 🎧 Send them to our Whatsapp number +263 77 810 3171

Whether you've been cheated on, forgiven, left, or stayed — this episode is for you.

🎧 Tune in now.

Join us for this heartfelt episode all about… friendship!

This week, we dive into a dilemma from one of our listeners who's feeling the very real strain of navigating adult friendships. What starts as one person's question quickly turns into a group therapy session, as we realize just how universal this struggle is.

Why does it feel harder to be vulnerable with our friends as we grow older? Why do we hesitate to reach out when we need support the most? In unpacking these questions, we get honest about emotional walls, shifting dynamics, and the quiet grief of fading connections.

Can you relate? We'd love to hear your story. Tune in, reflect with us, and maybe send this to that one friend you've been meaning to check in on. 💬💛

Are you sending peeled banana emojis to your workmate? Stop it. Seriously.

In this episode, we dive headfirst into the tricky, controversial terrain of workplace romance, flirty texts, and the very real line between mutual attraction and sexual harassment. Sparked by one of your real-life dilemmas, we tackle it all—raw, honest, and unfiltered.

From our personal experiences to headline-making scandals, nothing is off-limits. Is workplace romance always wrong, or are there grey areas? We unpack everything from Judge President Mbenenge's case in South Africa to our own Mai Jeremiah in Zimbabwe. Are women overreacting—or is there something darker at play in professional spaces? As always, we spiral into some heavy existential debates and, yes, we preach the gospel of good old-fashioned ABSTINENCE. This one's not for the faint-hearted. Tune in, don't hold back, and let us know where you stand.

In this Listener's Choice episode, we dive into a question that lit up our inbox: "What does it mean to be a submissive woman?"

Anesu, Kuda, and Chido unpack the layers — personal, religious, cultural, and sometimes uncomfortable — around the idea of submission in modern relationships. From faith and feminism to family dynamics, they explore what submission looks like (or doesn't) in their lives.

VI the Law joins the conversation, sharing a male perspective on submission and what it means to "lead" in a relationship — without tipping into control.

It's honest, it's layered, it's a little spicy. You asked, we answered.

In this bold and thought-provoking episode, we dive into the complex and often controversial intersection of faith and finances. Why does poverty so often walk hand in hand with religion—particularly in Black communities? We unpack whether the modern-day church is a safe haven for the faithful or a system that sometimes exploits economic vulnerability. Is this a legacy of colonialism, or has the Black church evolved into something else entirely? Join us as we ask the hard questions, draw uncomfortable lines, and try to make sense of this ongoing conversation at the heart of our communities.

🎬 Tyler Perry, Why??

Tyler Perry's new and controversial film STRAW has sparked intense reactions — and in this episode, we're diving all the way in. Why does mainstream media keep serving Black women the same tired struggle stories? Where's the luxury? The joy? The soft life?

We asked our listeners: have you ever experienced princess treatment — or is it just another fantasy sold on Instagram? The responses were real, vulnerable, and revealing.

Whether you've watched STRAW or never plan to, this episode unpacks how Black women are portrayed on screen and in life — and how we can start reshaping the narrative ourselves.

💅🏾 It's time to make space for softness, wealth, and ease — because we're more than just survival stories.

In this week's episode we used AI as our therapist. Wild right! The prompt is below for you to try it out too. If you can share your inner most thoughts with AI, can you share them with your boyfriend/girlfriend? We unpack the tricky balance between transparency and emotional dumping in romantic connections.

We explore:

The fear of becoming vulnerable

Why some people overshare — and what it says about their emotional needs

The impact of trauma on how we open up

Whether you're in a new relationship, situationship, or long-term commitment, this episode will challenge how you view emotional intimacy and boundaries.

💡 Tune in to learn when sharing builds connection — can it ever be too much.

🎧 Don't forget to like, follow, and share with that friend who tells their partner everything!

PROMPT: I want to uncover the masks I'm currently wearing, the roles I'm playing, and the illusions I'm believing. Please guide me through this process by asking me 10 reflective questions, one at a time, to help me recognize the stories I'm telling myself. After I answer the 10th question, please step into the role of my higher self and analyze my responses. Identify the top negative patterns present in my life and the top positive patterns I can embrace and grow. Be direct and truthful, tough love is welcome. Provide me with daily affirmations to support my growth, actionable steps to change my behavior, and embody my authentic self, a message of encouragement from my highest self to celebrate how far I've come on my journey.

#Oversharing #Relationships #Vulnerability #EmotionalBoundaries #DatingTalk #Situationships #MillennialPodcast #GenZRelationships #AfricanVoices #ZimbabwePodcast

Join us for a raw, honest conversation about toxic female friendships—those draining, unbalanced relationships many women tolerate for too long. The hosts open up about their personal experiences with friends who:

•	compete instead of celebrate,

•	gossip instead of communicate,

•	and manipulate instead of support.

The conversation explores:

•	How to identify subtle red flags early on,

•	The guilt and grief of ending long-term friendships,

•	The fear of confronting toxic behaviour, especially in women we once called sisters,

•	The cultural expectation that women must always "keep the peace",

•	The importance of choosing friendships that feel emotionally safe.

VI the law, our resident male voice, brings a grounded outside perspective, questioning whether women hold each other accountable with the same energy they reserve for men—and why many women struggle to call out cruelty in their own circles.

Throughout the episode, laughter and vulnerability balance the weight of the topic. Listeners are challenged to reflect on their own role in unhealthy friendships—whether as the hurt or the hurter.

⏱️ Timestamps: Key Moments

00:00 – 02:45 Intro: Welcome to Season 3 and topic preview

02:46 – 08:30 Defining "toxic friendship": What it looks like and feels like

08:31 – 13:50 When support turns into subtle competition

13:51 – 19:15 Ghosting and weaponized silence

19:16 – 23:40 Betrayal and unspoken resentment in long-term friendships

23:41 – 29:00 Confrontation avoidance: Why women don't call each other out

29:01 – 34:15 Male guest weighs in: "Do women give women too many passes?"

34:16 – 39:30 Can a toxic friend change—and should you wait for it?

39:31 – 45:00 Healing and boundary-setting: The path forward

45:01 – End Final thoughts, listener challenge, and season preview

💬 Notable Quotes

•	"Not all history deserves loyalty."

•	"If your wins make her silent, she's not your sister."

•	"You can outgrow people without becoming bitter."

Guest: Donna Ray-White, Wealth Manager at DeVere Group

Recorded at: NRVANA Labs

In this eye-opening episode of As Told By Us, we sit down with wealth manager Donna Ray-White for a candid and empowering conversation on saving and investing in Zimbabwe.

Donna breaks down the misconceptions that stop many of us from taking our savings seriously, and offers practical, first-hand advice on how to grow your money—even in a tough economic environment. From banking hurdles to unstable policies, she helps us understand why it's so hard to build a financial footprint as a young Zimbabwean—and how we can still make it work.

We also unpack the lack of representation of black women in the investment space, and why it's critical for us to change that narrative. Donna shares her own inspiring journey with investing and proves that smart money moves aren't out of reach for our generation.

💡 Whether you're just starting your savings journey or looking to take your investments to the next level, this episode is full of insight, myth-busting, and motivation to do better with your money.

📩 Chat with us on our social media.

☕ Support the podcast by sending us a coffee on InnBucks: 0778103171 or through World Remit.

📱 Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and all major platforms.

🎙️ Recorded at NRVANA Labs.

It's an episode takeover! 🎤 This week, VI the Law (previously known as the Mysterious Male Voice) leads the conversation — and he's coming for all the hard questions.

Last week, we agreed that a university degree isn't the only path to success. But this week, we're asking: is the grass really greener on the creative side?

This one's for the creatives — the musicians, artists, designers, DJs, playwrights, poets, influencers, actors — everyone blessed with a gift.

We get real about what it's actually like being a creative in Zimbabwe:

🔹 Is the "starving artist" trope even worse in our economy?

🔹 Can passion realistically pay the bills?

🔹 What does the average creative really earn?

🔹 Is there a viable market outside Harare — or outside the mainstream sound?

VI the Law shares deep insights from his own journey in Zimbabwe's creative industry. We also look at:

•	The struggle between staying authentic and "selling out" for success.

•	Whether gimmicks are necessary to survive.

•	Whether platforms like Spotify and Apple Music help or exploit African artists.

⚡ Get ready for some heated debates — yes, arguments — as we dive into the real challenges, the hustle, and the dreams of Zimbabwean creatives.

Tune in, defend your favs, and join the conversation on our social media.

📱 Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and all major platforms.

💸 Love what we do and want to support the pod?
Africa's obsession with getting a degree: is it even worth it? Season 3 Episode 2

🎓 Risking It All for That Piece of Paper?

In this episode, we unpack Africa's deep-rooted obsession with academic qualifications. Is a university degree still the golden ticket it once was—or has the paper chase lost its shine in today's world?

We're joined by VI The Law—award-winning rapper, producer, and previously known as the Mysterious Male Voice. He opens up about his own journey: graduating with flying colours in a deeply academic family, only to risk it all and follow his true passion—music. His story captures the inner conflict so many young Africans face: live for the expectations, or live for yourself?

We also explore the pressure that drives people to get degrees at all costs—sometimes even faking them—and question whether a degree is still the rite of passage it once was. From high-profile scandals to the everyday student wondering "what's next?", we get real about what education actually means for this generation and the ones to come.

And if you've ever thought about choosing a different path, we've got you. We talk career prospects beyond the traditional route—and even throw in a few tips on how to deal with your African parents who just don't get it. Or better yet… just send them this episode.

📱 Loved the episode?

To kick off Season 3, we handed the mic to the unforgettable Donna Ray-White — and let's just say, you're going to want to sit down for this one.

In this powerful opener, Donna doesn't just share her story — she takes us through the fire that forged her. From a tough childhood and teen pregnancy to becoming a powerhouse Senior Wealth Manager at The DeVere Group, Donna's journey is layered with grit, grace, and the kind of growth that only comes from walking through the storm.

She opens up about:

🔹 Feeling the fire of leadership from a young age — even when the world tried to snuff it out

🔹 Navigating love, marriage, divorce, and motherhood before most of us find our footing

🔹 Losing herself in the noise — then rising, bolder, by choosing herself

🔹 Pushing through economic struggle, building businesses, and climbing her way into the corporate arena

Donna reminds us: diamonds aren't born — they're made under pressure. And she is living, breathing proof.

🎧 Want more?

Are we intellectually doomed to the extent that we cannot critically engage in topics anymore, read for ourselves and form our own opinions, relying on social media and other people to tell us what to think? In this episode we discuss whether we are still a people that read books, listen to informative material like podcasts and watch youtube videos on things with substance or are we now addicted to "trash tv", scandals etc?

Do we still have the capability to critically engage with information objectively, keep an open mind and form your own opinion that will be respected even if it goes against the loudest and contrary voice.

Who creates the narrative of what is right or wrong? And what makes that the common opinion?

We also discuss the classism issue around the "type of woman" who attends this event and classism in general in Harare especially in the music space and boiling down to classism even in our own families. What is that about???

We give our advice on how to cut off toxic friends when you have mutual friends in this week's dilamma.

Today we dive into the complex yet important discussion of breaking generational curses with a particular focus on generational poverty.

What does generational wealth mean in an African context? Has the definition of generational wealth evolved overtime?

Let's talk about it....

We delve into the understanding of "people pleasing" and how to recover from the same.

Christianity or African Traditional Religion ? Can we have both? S2 EP2

In this episode we talk about religion.

We look at Christianity compared with African Traditional Religion from our perspectives.

In the late 1800's , Christianity was introduced to Zimbabwe and other African countries during the colonial era. In many cases this was intended to replace the local traditional religious practices and beliefs. Africans were made to prefer Christianity over their own religion .

As millennials born into christian families in Africa, we discuss the conflict between the two forms of religion and whether one must really abandon the African Traditional Religion and advance christianity.

We also talk about "Black Tax" which is intrinsic to black African families.

In this episode we discuss the 'F' word - feminism.

This episode dispels many myths about feminism and gives our approach to what it means and how it applies to day to day life.

Does feminism seek 50/50 and is that the same as equality? If women want to be equal then does it mean we should contribute 50/50 to dates and bills? Should we be asking men out on dates too?

Join us for this very interesting chat and let us know what you think?

Disclaimer: this episode is not for the faint hearted. If you don't agree? Please let us know. Let's take the conversation further.
