Selam & Hello has partnered with the Australian High Commission as they celebrate 60 years of partnership with Kenya for this special series: Saying the African Part Out Loud! In this final (and wonderfully fun!) episode, Lilly sits down in studio with Nyokabi (Kabi) Kuguru, founder of Mount Kenya Coffee.

With roots in a multigenerational farming family in Nyeri County, Kabi is carrying forward her grandfather's legacy while forging new connections between Kenya and Australia. Armed with two master's degrees from the University of Sydney—in Public Health and Digital Communication and Media—Kabi's path into coffee wasn't the obvious one. But through heritage, passion, and purpose, she is building Mount Kenya Coffee into more than a brand: it's a platform for storytelling, cultural exchange, and community.

In this episode, we explore what gave her the confidence to enter a demanding global coffee market, what she is learning from farmers in Kenya and roasters in Australia, how she defines success, and the beautiful advice her grandfather shared with his grandchildren. Kabi also graced the studio with Mount Kenya Coffee beans, and as she and Lilly enjoy a hot cup, they wrap up with a lively game of kahawa ama chai to discover her true favorite!

Mwalimu John Sibi-Okumu has had a storied career as a writer, columnist, stage actor-director-playwright, TV & film actor, voice-over artist, and radio & TV broadcaster. In 2022, he was named to the Order of the Golden Warrior in recognition of his outstanding contributions to arts and culture in Kenya.

Mwalimu JSO has played more than 40 characters on stage, including Romeo, Shylock, and King Oedipus, and has acted in global films, including The Constant Gardener, Shake Hands with the Devil, and The First Grader. Mwalimu JSO is the author of six original, published plays and has also written published prose and poetry. On television, he memorably presented not only prime-time news but also The Summit and The Zain Africa Challenge. On the former, he is credited with being the only TV host to have had a one-on-one interview with the late President Daniel arap Moi, complementing the interviews he has had with four other African presidents. Did you know that although Black South Africans represent more than 80 percent of the country, only 1% of wine brands sold there are Black-owned? Our guest today is determined to see that change one sip at a time. Munashe Kwaramba, a dynamic sommelier and winemaker, and the chef and owner of Hari Kitchen in Franschhoek, South Africa joins us this week to tell his story. Munashe journeyed from Zimbabwe to South Africa as a student, became a qualified sommelier at 23, and at age 27 founded his own restaurant and wine label. In this episode, he explores how his grandmother's influence has shaped his culinary creations at Hari Kitchen, his commitment to creating a space for Africans and those in the diaspora to feel at home, and why being a Black African is the best thing that ever happened to him!

Tsitsi's interview recounts her mother's profound influence on her life, instilling in her the conviction to harness the intellect and creativity that would lead to an award-winning career. She delves into the creation of her timeless character Tambudzai, an emblem of potential for Zimbabwean girls, and discusses the intricate ties between Tambu's story and the national narrative of the Zimbabwean Liberation Struggle as depicted in her acclaimed novels "Nervous Conditions," "The Book of Not," and "This Mournable Body." Further, Tsitsi reflects on the recognition of her work by the Booker Prize, the importance of political and social engagement, and by whom she most wants her writing to be understood. The conversation also traverses the critical importance of the African creative economy, as Tsitsi underlines the power of the boundless African imagination - a key to sustainable development and cultural empowerment.

Tsitsi's art and courage have been lauded across the world. She has won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize, the 2021 PEN International Award for Freedom of Expression, the 2022 Windham-Campbell Literature Prize (fiction) at Yale University and was the 2022-2023 Joy Foundation Fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. In 2020, "This Mournable Body" was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Tsitsi is the Founder and Director of the Institute of Creative Arts for Progress in Africa Trust.

Selam & Hello to all our wonderful listeners - we are thrilled to be back with Season 2 of Selam & Hello! Our guest today is actor, activist, and tech entrepreneur Arséma Angela Adeoluwayemi Hamera Thomas. Arséma has captured the imagination of global audiences with their portrayal of the young lady Danbury in Netflix's original series from Shonda Rhimes - Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerston Story. Born to a Nigerian father and an Ethiopian mother, Arséma is the definition of a pan-African global citizen. They not only speak multiple languages but they have engaged with the challenges they saw growing up head-on through their academic and creative work, as well as their social impact entrepreneurship. Having traversed multiple countries, she pursued a career in the arts only after graduating with a degree in Biophysics from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Public Health from Yale University. They are an advocate for health equity, marginalized populations, and a staunch voice for justice. Today we journey through their life, exploring the interplay of joy and justice. Although they were not able to talk about the show due to the writer's strike, Lilly and Arséma take a leisurely stroll through their shared Ethiopian heritage, her must-have songs for any playlist, explore the cost of being a voice for equity and inclusion in Hollywood, discuss the works of Ta-Nahisi Coates and Zora Neale Hurston and in the end - try to determine if they are cousins. Live! The Happiest Place on Earth: A Journey to Centrafrique

In this special edition, join Lilly and the live audience as she has a soul-stirring conversation with Jean, a loving father, dedicated husband, and a resilient citizen of Centrafrique. Jean introduces us to his "happiest place on earth", a country populated with warm people whose focus is on the present, not the past.

Jean, born and raised amidst the decades-long civil war in Centrafrique, reveals the harsh realities of living in a country beset by political unrest since 1997. He shares intimate stories about his upbringing as well as how laughter helped them cope with the challenges they faced. Jean tells us about his escape to Chad, after a heart-wrenching separation from his family during a coup, and how he was reunited with them. His stories of rice in refugee camps and falling into a river infuse the conversation with humor and courage.

Jean's journey takes a turn when he moves to France, and confronts and navigates a system entrenched with racism. His choice to relocate to Kenya - an English-speaking country - started as a form of rebellion but evolved into a love story. Nonetheless, the various changes in his life, between languages and borders, have left him with both stories of joy - and of the justice he wants to create for his beloved homeland.

RECIPE FOR ETHIOPIAN BEEF (or LAMB) TIBS - CLASSIC RECIPE

-------Ingredients ----------

1/2 chopped red onion
1 pepper (optional)
1 tablespoon kibe (Ethiopian clarified butter)
1 tablespoon Berbere (Ethiopian spice)
1 cup of beef - chopped into cube sizes
2 tablespoons oil
1 tablespoon salt

--------Instructions -------------

With your pan on medium high heat add cubed beef, mix and stir.
Continue to stir occasionally until the beef pieces are half way cooked.
Add oil to the pan and mix well.
After about 2 min and the beef pieces are no longer pink add onions and mix.
Next, you want to add about a tablespoon of berbere (the less you add the less spicy the dish will be). After you add the berbere quickly mix well as it will stick to the pan. You may need to add more oil.
After about 2 min add kibe and mix well.
Turn the heat down to low, add salt and mix well.
Serve with injera

In the face of this dire situation, where over 1000 people have lost their lives since April 15th and countless more have been forced to leave their homes, Lilly invites three Sudanese nationals to lead us into the heart of Sudan, its vibrant culture, diverse people, and resilient spirit. Mohamed, Raga, and Elkhair are located across the world, but their hearts are in Sudan.

Raga, who has spent most of her life in Sudan and has lived in Oxford, England for the past decade, articulates her feelings of rootedness to her homeland. She recently had to evacuate Khartoum with her parents and describes Sudan as not just a place, but an extension of her very being—a grounding force and a constant in her conversations and memories.

According to the UN, Gen Z, the generation born between 1997 and 2011 and aged approximately between 12 to 26 years, is the most populous generation in the world. They are the first generation to grow up with the internet, a declining climate, war and terrorism as the norm and social media. As a result - they are different. In a recent Selam & Hello survey, our listeners said they wanted to hear more from 'young people and men.' So in today's show, Lilly sits down with four young men - all members of Gen Z - to talk about their lives and futures. The conversation went almost 2 hours so we will bring you the discussion in two parts. The Living History of the African Woman

In a continuation of our celebration of Women's History Month - Lilly talks to Samba Yonga - award-winning journalist, cultural curator, and co-founder of the Women's History Museum of Zambia. Samba co-founded the digital museum in 2017 with Mulenga Kapwepwe to 'research and restore African indigenous narratives, knowledge, and living histories' - entirely focused on women. Samba walks Lilly through the journey of revelation that began when she saw a Zambian exhibit in a Swedish museum and dared to ask how they could digitally repatriate those Zambian artifacts and narratives to their rightful home and source communities. Samba explores the importance and justice of knowledge creation and distribution, validating original sources and moving away from patterns of western museology. Lilly and Samba talk about the impact that the work of the Women's History Museum of Zambia has had - from parents using it to educate their children about their heritage to men confirming how learning about their history has shifted how they view and value women's place in their communities and societies.

Elephants Are Our Engineers

Did you know that elephants snore? In this episode, Lilly talks to elephant expert, conservationist, Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year and CEO of WildlifeDirect - Dr. Paula Kahumbu. Dr. Kahumbu is a Princeton-trained elephant ecologist who shares the vital importance of conserving wildlife in order to conserve the planet. Dr. Kahumbu explores how she continues to learn from the elephants and the important role they play in engineering our African landscapes. Lilly and Paula discuss how advocacy has helped connect the dots between science and conservation through campaigns such as WildlifeDirect's "Hands Off Our Elephants," which made great strides toward protecting this incredible species from poaching. Award-winning actor, director, and writer Mugambi Nthiga joins Lilly for an episode all about the movies. Following the Oscar nominations, Lilly and Mugambi talk about their favorite films of 2022, the celebration of films such as blockbuster and diaspora-inspired Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and the apparent snubs of The Woman King and Nope. They also explore the importance (if any) of institutions such as The Academy for the African film industry and how the creative industries - and audiences - on the continent can continue to empower filmmakers in the industry. Mugambi shares the process of creation - and the lasting impact - of two films he co-wrote, Kati Kati and Supa Modo, that were Kenya's submissions to the Oscars in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Mugambi highlights the priceless value and impact the arts have in society and why it's important to continue to produce art that pushes forward culturally shifting conversations.

Elijah is the 2017 and 2019 Annual Journalism Excellence Awards Journalist of the Year, an acclaimed investigative reporter with Africa Uncensored and founder of SautiTV, a mentoring program for young journalists. Elijah was born and bred in Mathare, one of Nairobi's poorest neighborhoods and considers himself a voice for his community. CNN Hero of the Year Freweini Mebrahtu

It is an absolute honor to welcome Freweini Mebrahtu to Up/Root! Freweini is a global leader in menstrual health management and CNN's 2019 Hero of the Year for her work to eliminate the stigma associated with periods and her 15-year campaign to provide women and girls in Ethiopia equitable access to reusable pads. She started Mariam Seba Sanitary Products Factory in Mekelle, Ethiopia in 2005 and her factory is staffed by over 60 women who now produce over 1 million reusable sanitary pads annually. Freweini partners with Mekelle University and Dignity Period in her mission to restore period justice to Ethiopia and since 2009, they have reached more than 800,000 students. Research shows that schools visited by Dignity Period have a 24% increase in attendance among girls and for only $5 a year, you can support a young girl's access to the sanitary pads she needs. Tom Mboya is a hero of Kenyan history and in October 2019, the Too Early for Birds storytelling theatre production group told Mboya's story in the "dopest, funkiest ways you can imagine." This is the fifth show they have put on in Nairobi and their performance was so popular they had to add four more shows in November 2019. The Tom Mboya edition was transformative, electric and challenged all of us to think and act more consciously based on the lessons of history. We go deep in this conversation - so much so there are 2 episodes, an Up/Root first! When Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October, many Ethiopians and Eritreans marked the historic moment with pride and celebration. It was also an opportunity for me to re-visit the shared and intertwined history of the two sister countries with my friend Moges. We talk, laugh and discuss our Eritrean and Ethiopian identities and examine the important moment where our histories diverge. I learned so much and was reminded that coffee will always be a shared value and perhaps the secret to peace is in the shurro. Period Positive! Project Imagine's Fight for Menstrual Health Justice

Four out of 5 women and girls in Kenya lack access to sanitary pads and health education. In the US, 35 states tax tampons as a luxury item while Viagra is tax-free. Project Imagine is a group of high school students in Nairobi, Kenya, led by Selah Piper and Isabella Bunkers, who are working to eliminate the shame and stigma attached to menstruation by distributing sanitary pads to poor girls who would otherwise have limited access. In addition, for the last four years, they have been visiting three schools to not only distribute pads but administer a self-empowerment and health curriculum through a peer to peer model of mentorship with over 600 girls.
