Season 2 : Episode 6 Stoma Care Zambia: A Voice for the Unspoken

In this episode we have a candid discussion with Benjamin Lungu who is one of the inspiring founders behind Stoma Care Zambia, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals living with stomas. A stoma is a surgically created opening on the abdomen that allows waste (stool or urine) to leave the body when the normal route is not possible due to illness, injury, or surgery. It can be lifesaving, but it also comes with challenges.

Benjamin's vision has been to create a safe space where patients can find not only medical guidance but also emotional strength, community, and dignity in their journey. He understands that beyond the surgery and treatment, patients need ongoing support to live confidently and without stigma.

At Stoma Care Zambia, the team works tirelessly to:

• Educate and raise awareness about stomas, helping patients, families, and communities understand what they are and how to care for them.

• Provide peer support networks, where people living with stomas can share experiences, encourage one another, and break the silence around this condition.

• Advocate for access to essential ostomy products, such as stoma bags and skin care supplies, which are often difficult to find or afford in Zambia.

• Empower patients to live independently, with dignity and confidence, by challenging stigma and misconceptions.

Through Benjamin's leadership and the dedication of his colleagues, Stoma Care Zambia is transforming lives turning what many see as a burden into an opportunity for resilience, hope, and community.

Season 2 Episode 5: Every child matters. Every family deserves hope. Special Hope Network is rewriting Zambia's story of inclusion.

In this episode, we were honored to welcome Holly Nelson, one of the founders of Special Hope Network, an organization rewriting Zambia's story of inclusion.

Special Hope Network began with a simple but profound belief: every child matters. In Zambia, many children with intellectual disabilities face stigma, neglect, and limited access to care. Special Hope Network stepped into that gap, creating spaces where children are not only cared for but celebrated.

At the heart of their work are Community Care Centers — safe, inclusive hubs where families receive medical guidance, caregiver training, nutrition support, and therapies tailored to each child's needs. These centers are more than clinics; they are places of hope where parents learn, children grow, and communities witness the power of inclusion.

Beyond the centers, Special Hope Network's Community Outreach programs bring awareness to schools, churches, clinics, and neighborhoods. Through advocacy trainings, radio programs, and door-to-door sensitization, they challenge stigma and inspire communities to stand together in love and responsibility.

And for children who are abandoned or at risk, Special Hope Network created Finding Joy Zambia a home where forgotten children are nurtured, restored, and given the chance to reintegrate into family and community life.

This is not just charity; it is transformation. Special Hope Network's story is about families finding strength, communities embracing inclusion, and children discovering joy. It is about building a Zambia where every child has access to home, health, and education and where their dignity is never in question.

In this episode, we will be diving into the work of Scientific Initiatives for a Healthy and Developed Zambia (SiHDZ), a creative and innovative community-based nonprofit organization. SiHDZ operates under the NGO Act No. 16 of 2009 and is registered with the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services in Zambia since 2021. The organization is legally mandated to focus on two major thematic areas: Community Health and Community Development. SiHDZ is built on the fundamental belief that health is wealth and healthy individuals are the cornerstone of sustainably developed communities.

Founded in 2019 by a scientist with deep personal experiences of the challenges faced by low-income communities in Zambia, SiHDZ has grown into a mission-driven organization that leverages local knowledge, creativity, science and technology to address key community health and socioeconomic challenges. From their roots in both rural and urban Zambia, the founder and his team have committed themselves to tackling critical issues like access to diagnostic healthcare, socioeconomic empowerment and addressing the correlation between climate change, environmental degradation and health outcomes.

SiHDZ's vision is bold yet practical: to build self-sustaining communities with access to health services, socioeconomic opportunities and platforms that promote local innovation and development and their work spans multiple provinces, including Lusaka, Eastern, Southern, Copperbelt, and more ensuring that both urban and rural marginalized communities are reached.

Joining us on the podcast today is none other than Frank Malunga, the founder and leader of operations at SiHDZ. Frank's journey is one of resilience, innovation and commitment to empowering local communities. Growing up in both rural and urban Zambia, Frank witnessed firsthand the challenges of limited access to basic health and socioeconomic services and these experiences inspired him to create SiHDZ, and he continues to lead its operations with a focus on fostering local solutions for healthier and more developed communities.
